# Move a copy and keep its location history

When you picked a [location](https://getkollek.com/en/docs/core-concepts/locations) while creating a copy, you told KolleK where it lives. Moving is different: it changes where the copy lives *while remembering where it used to be*. Over the years, that becomes a trail of everywhere the copy has been kept.

## How location history works

A copy's location history is a chain of records. At any moment, exactly one record is open, and that open record is the copy's current location. Recording a move closes the previous record and opens a new one, stamped with the date and the reason.

So "where is it" and "where has it been" are the same data, read from different ends.

## Record a move

Open the item, go to its **History** tab, select the copy, and open the **Locations** section.

Record a move and pick the **new location** from your account's locations. If the right spot does not exist yet, an owner or editor can add it first (see [Set up your locations](https://getkollek.com/en/docs/organizing/set-up-your-locations)).

Set the **date** of the move, a **reason** ("Higher valuation, moved to the safe"), and any **note**. Save it.

The copy now shows the safe as its current location, and the drawer has become history with a start date, an end date, and a reason for leaving.

## Fixing a mistake

Correcting a past record is possible. If you mistyped a date or picked the wrong shelf, edit the record rather than adding a fake move to compensate. The history should reflect what actually happened.

Moving is for real, physical relocations. If you are reorganizing your storage itself, renaming a shelf or nesting a box somewhere else, change the location in [Set up your locations](https://getkollek.com/en/docs/organizing/set-up-your-locations) instead. Copies keep pointing at it, and no move records are needed.

## Why bother with the history

For everyday copies, the current location is all you will ever check. The history earns its place with valuable ones: an insurer may ask where a piece has been kept, a buyer may care that it spent a decade in a climate controlled cabinet, and you may simply want to know where something was the year it got scratched.
