# Manage account tags

[Tags](https://getkollek.com/en/docs/core-concepts/tags) are the shared labels of your account, and like any shared vocabulary they benefit from a little curation. This page covers managing the tag list itself from account settings, as opposed to tagging items one by one, which is covered in [Tag and find items](https://getkollek.com/en/docs/core-features/tag-and-find-items).

You need the editor or owner role.

## Where tags come from

Tags appear in the list two ways: someone creates one deliberately in account settings, or someone types a new tag on an item form and it is created on the spot. Both end up in the same account wide list, shared by every collection.

## Create, rename, and delete

Open **Tags** in account settings to see every tag in the account.

- **Create** a tag ahead of time when you want the vocabulary ready before a big cataloguing session.
- **Rename** a tag to fix a typo or merge wording. Renaming updates the label everywhere it is used.
- **Delete** a tag you no longer want.

Deleting a tag removes it from every item in the account at once. The items themselves are untouched, but the label is gone everywhere and there is no undo for the removal.

## Keep the list useful

A tag list turns messy quietly: "signed", "Signed", and "autographed" all meaning the same thing. A few habits keep it clean:

- **Agree on wording early** if several people catalogue. Pick "Signed" once and stick to it.
- **Prefer a handful of meaningful tags** over dozens of one offs. A tag used on a single item is usually a note, not a tag.
- **Sweep occasionally.** Rename near duplicates into one, and delete tags that no longer earn their place.
- **Do not duplicate structure that exists elsewhere.** "Jazz" is probably a [category](https://getkollek.com/en/docs/organizing/organize-items-with-categories); "Signed" cuts across everything and is a perfect tag.

Noah keeps exactly six tags for his vinyl: Signed, First Pressing, Sealed, To Sell, Wishlist Upgrade, and Gift. Every one of them answers a question he actually asks.
